Lawmakers in New York have agreed to pass the toughest gun control laws in the United States and the first since the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut!  The measure, which passed with a 43-18 vote, calls for a more strict ban on assault weapons and restrictions on the sale of guns and ammo.  The new bill will be presented to the Democrat-led Assembly, which should pass it through with ease.

Other Tidbits-

-Current state law says assault weapons are defined by having 2 "military rifle" features that are spelled out in the law.  New proposal will drop that down to 1 feature and include the pistol grip!

-Private sales of an assault weapon to someone other than immediate family will require a background check.

-Internet sales are banned!

-Failing to safely store a weapon could result in a misdemeanor charge!

-Ammo magazines would be restricted to 7  bullets! Those with a larger magazine would have 1 year to sell them out of state!  Also an owner caught with 8 or more bullets in a magazine could face a misdemeanor charge!
