Turns out that the State University of New York at Buffalo has moved into the top third of the top-rated universities in the world.  According to the latest QS World University Ratings of the world's top 950 universities, UB emerged at #318.  And that's pretty impressive when you consider there are more than 4,350 degree-granting universities in the United States alone.

Only the University of Rochester was rated higher among upstate New York State universities coming in at #186.  Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute finished at #364.  Syracuse University was #522.

The QS University Ratings are based on the responses of nearly 75,000 educators from around the world in categories such as academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per faculty member, faculty to student ratio, international student ratio and international faculty ratio.

Five of the top universities in the world are located in the United States, including the  top four:

  1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  2. Stanford University
  3. Harvard University
  4. California Institute of Technology
