On November 16, 2008, John Miller, of the National Guard, was shot.

"He was selfless in the line of duty and that is why I am nominating him-he truly deserves this more than anyone else I know," the nominator says.

The mission was the last of John’s deployment and his team was looking for weapons’ caches. He was coming home. John helped maneuver his soldiers into the most protected spots along a rooftop, and he was left with the most exposed space.

John shot a flare to allow the helicopters (that had been called in) to mark their position, but as he did, he was shot through both of his legs.

Following several surgeries, John is walking again. Although he has nerve damage, scars and legs that aren't as strong as they once were, with the help of a leg brace he is able to be active.
