His name is Matthew Mondoux.  He’s a Grand Island native and after serving in Afghanistan he returned home to find out a good friend was diagnosed with ALS – Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Beginning this Sunday, July 10th, Mondoux will be heading to New York City and he’s walking it - 350 miles from Grand Island Veterans Park to Yankee Stadium, a trip he expects to take 12 days to complete.  And during the trip he’ll be wearing a custom-made Lou Gehrig uniform and the Yankees hat he took with him to both Iraq and Afghanistan.

While in New York Matthew will meet with the head of the Lou Gehrig Research Center at Columbia University.

He’ll be wearing a GPS along the way and you can keep track of his progress at his website Walking4lou.com
