The Dixie Chicks are really into covering songs by pop artists lately — they even made Beyonce's "Daddy Lessons" a staple during their DCX MMXVI World Tour! Now, frontwoman Natalie Maines has taken on Kesha.

On Sunday (August 27), Maines uploaded a snippet of herself covering Kesha's vulnerable song "Bastards" (off her new album, Rainbow, released on Aug. 11) to Instagram. Alone on acoustic guitar, Maines brings new meaning to the song's heavy lyrics.

"My first try at a Kesha cover;) I love her new album Rainbow!!!!" the country singer writes.

Kesha has had a tough few years in a bitter court battle with her former producer, Dr. Luke, whom she alleges sexually assaulted and abused her. Her "Bastards" lyrics give added significance to the struggles she's had in the spotlight during her trial, but also serve as an anthem to anyone who has ever been criticized and made to feel unworthy.

"I got too many people / I got left to prove wrong / All those motherf-ckers been too mean for too long / And I’m so sick of crying / Yeah darling, what’s it for / I could fight forever / But life’s too short / Don’t let the bastards get you down / Don’t let the assholes wear you out / Don’t let the mean girls take the crown / Don’t let the scumbags screw you ’round / Don’t let the bastards take you down," Maines sings, belting Kesha's emotional words.

Kesha caught wind of the cover, and she was humbled. She praised the Dixie Chicks singer on Twitter, writing, "Slightly dying with happiness."
