Man Dead After Being Shot By Police Officer In Town Of Niagara

A man has died after being shot by a police officer in the Town of Niagara. The officer-involved fatal shooting happened on Saturday, November 19, 2022. Police were called to the 4700 block of Chester Avenue just before 8:45 pm to respond to a domestic violence incident. According to WIVB, a 40-year-old man died. The incident is under investigation. The New York State Attorney General's Office will also review and possibly investigate.

History-Making Rochester Area Police Officer Involved In Murder-Suicide

Recently, in Rochester, there was also a fatal officer-involved shooting. New York State's Attorney General, Letitia James, has launched an investigation into the death of a Rochester resident at the hands of an off-duty police officer. The NYS AG's Office of Special Investigation is investigating the death of 27-year-old Angely Solis, who died on Thursday, November 14, 2022. Solis was killed in Rochester by an off-duty member of the Greece Police Department, 29-year-old Tiffani Gatson. Officer Gaston made history four years ago by becoming the first African-American female officer at the Greece Police Department.

Around 7:20 pm, officers with the Rochester Police Department responded to a call for shots fired at a home on Costar Street. When police arrived both Solis, Gatson, and a third person, a woman in her 30s, were found outside the residence with gunshot wounds. Solis was pronounced dead at the scene. Gatson and the other woman were transported to an area hospital. Gatson was pronounced dead at the hospital. The third victim is expected to recover. Police found a Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun at the scene. The gun was not Gatson's service weapon.

According to NBC News, Gaston shot Solis and the other person, before turning the gun on herself.

Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI assesses every incident reported to it where a police officer or a peace officer, including a corrections officer, may have caused the death of a person, by an act or omission. Under the law, the officer may be on-duty or off duty, and the decedent may be armed or unarmed. If OSI’s assessment indicates an officer caused the death, OSI proceeds to conduct a full investigation of the incident.
