Western New York Is Going Through This For The First Time Since 2021

The weather has been pretty crazy here in Western New York and now the area is going through something for the first time in a couple of years.

Due to the lack of rain over the last several weeks, for the first time since 2021, Western New York will be experiencing drought conditions.

WHAT ARE DROUGHT CONDITIONS?

A drought is defined as "a period of abnormally dry weather sufficiently prolonged for the lack of water to cause a serious hydrologic imbalance in the affected area." Hydrologic imbalance means that more water is flowing out of an area than into an area.

WHAT AREAS ARE BEING AFFECTED BY THE DROUGHT CONDITIONS?

According to the US drought monitor, all of Western New York is under abnormally dry conditions, while parts of Western New York near the Pennsylvania border are under moderate drought conditions.

WHEN CAN WE EXPECT RAIN IN WESTERN NEW YORK?

One way to help alleviate some of the drought conditions is to get some rain. The good news is that looking ahead to the extended forecast, rain is on the way. The biggest amount of rain is expected to come through the area on Monday.

Drought conditions can really hurt area farmers. The conditions can also impact the amount of water you can use. During a drought, there could be restrictions on watering your lawn, washing your car, or using water resources for non-essential reasons.
