For many, the second Monday in October has meant a day off from work and school in observation of Columbus Day. Many history books claim that Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492 when he "sailed the ocean blue." Columbus Day was proclaimed a national holiday in 1934 by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Today is Native American Day. It’s always on the fourth Friday in September. It’s a day set aside to honor and celebrate Native Americans, the first ones to live in what is now the United States.
