If you are trying to by a smartphone for a discounted rate, you may want to be cautious, because it could be part of a major phone scam that has swept across Western New York.
It would be concerning to receive a call from someone who might be the police telling you that you need to meet them. It would be even scarier to find out that person wasn't a police officer at all.
The Erie County Sheriff's department has issued a warning to be alert for a phone scam they've learned about. They've received complaints that a man claiming to be a sheriff's deputy is making calls warning residents that they've missed jury duty and demanding that they pay a $2,500.00 fine to avoid being arrested.
It's kind of sad what people will do to get a few dollars from generous people. I wanted to make you aware of a scam that someone reported to our friends at WNYHeroes.
