We have moved on from one of the wettest Julys in Western New York history to one of the hottest Augusts on record.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, on average the daily temperature has been 74.8 degrees for far this August. That average temperature places this August in a tie for 3rd hottest on record in Western New York. Of course, we could see that average daily temperature rise this week as we are expecting record-breaking highs on Wednesday and Thursday.

Overall the hottest August on record had an average daily temperature of 75.6 degrees, which was back in 2016. The 2nd hottest average daily temperature was 75.2 degrees back in 1947.

The normal average daily temperature for Western New York is around 71 degrees.

With more heat expected this week, there are several things you should do to make sure that you stay safe if you have to be outdoors.

The first thing is to make sure you have plenty of water. Lack of water and high temperatures could lead to heat stroke. Also if you have to be outside for prolong amounts of time, you need to seek some shade especially in the hottest parts of the day which is around noon.

Will we see the heatwave continue into September? The average temperature in September is around 68 degrees and we will see higher than average temperatures to start September before cooling down towards the end of the month.
