Alan Jackson like much of the United States had a heavy heart after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.  It must have really weighed on him so much that he said the song, "Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)" seemed to just flow from his pen.

He woke up early on a Sunday morning following the attacks with the melody and some of the opening lines of the song.  After his wife and kids had gone to Sunday school, he finished the rest of the song.

He performed it for the first time live at the CMA awards on November 7, 2001.  But it was October 29th when it was recorded for his CD 'Drive'.
