It was a combination of good luck and bad weather that allowed Jeff Gordon to win his first race of the season. Teammate Jimmie Johnson got loose on a restart and knocked Matt Kenseth into the wall. Kenseth then bounced off the wall and took out Denny Hamlin and that’s the opening Gordon needed to take the lead. And for Gordon it couldn’t have come at a better time. Rain started falling and with 98 of the scheduled 160 laps completed, officials called the race and Gordon was awarded the win.

David Reutimann apologized for his mistake that had a huge impact on the outcome of yesterday’s race at Martinsville. With a broken suspension he elected to stay on the track to build points, but then his engine quit and he coasted to a stop just three laps from the scheduled end of the race. Even with a vibration issue late in the race, Jeff Gordon was able to hold off Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Jimmie Johnson, during the closing laps to win Tuesday's Sprint Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway -- a race delayed two days by Tropical Storm Lee. Gordon led a race-high 146 laps for his third win this season and 85th career Cup victory putting him in sole possession of third place on the all-time winners list.
