New York State Hunting Licenses On Sale With Massive Changes

The best part of the year has almost arrived for hunters across New York State.

As we cruise through the final weeks of summer and head toward fall, the leaves will soon begin to change, the nights will become cooler, and hunting season will be here before you know it. Are you ready for the season? Have you picked up your hunting license yet?

Hunters Have Been Counting Down to Deer Season

Few things get New York hunters more excited than the day hunting licenses go on sale.

The anticipation has been building since early May, when many of us first spotted bucks growing antlers covered in velvet on our trail cameras. It has been an exceptional summer, and it seems like there are more whitetail bucks roaming the woods than ever before. At the same time, many hunters and homeowners have noticed an increase in does and fawns appearing on trail cameras and in backyards across the state.

If you’re like most outdoor enthusiasts, your social media feed has probably been filled with photos and videos of black bears and young whitetail deer all summer long.

New York State Makes Changes for Deer Hunters

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) continues to manage the state’s whitetail deer population through several hunting programs.

This fall, hunters will see changes involving Deer Management Permits (DMPs), including expanded opportunities to transfer permits. There is also an Earn-A-Buck program available in certain wildlife management units that allows eligible hunters to earn the opportunity to harvest a second buck.

Before heading into the woods this season, be sure to review the latest regulations from the DEC to ensure you understand the rules that apply where you hunt.

New York Hunting Licenses Are Available Now

As of August 3, 2026, New York hunting licenses are available for hunters planning to pursue whitetail deer with either archery equipment or firearms.

"Beginning with the 2024/2025 license year, all New York sporting licenses, tags, and other printable items were formatted to fit on 8.5 x 11 plain paper. If you make a purchase at a License Issuing Agent (LIA) and they print your transaction, they are able to charge a $1 printing fee."

Keep in mind that archery season opens on October 1 in many areas of New York State, although season dates vary by wildlife management unit. Always check the official regulations for your specific hunting area before opening day.

First-Time Hunters Need Hunter Education

Planning to hunt for the first time?

New hunters must complete a certified Hunter Education Course before purchasing a hunting license. If you plan to hunt with a bow or crossbow, you’ll also need to complete the required Bowhunter Education Course.

Crossbow hunting continues to grow in popularity across New York, with crossbows permitted during designated portions of the archery season in accordance with state regulations.

New Youth Hunting Opportunities in Erie County

One of the biggest changes this year is that 13-year-old hunters in Erie County can now hunt deer with a shotgun during the regular season under New York’s expanded youth hunting program.

In addition, New York will once again offer its special Youth Deer Hunt weekend, giving young hunters another opportunity to enjoy time in the woods with experienced mentors.

Don’t Forget to Buy Your Hunting License
