Cashless Tolls For NYS Thruway By Late Next Year

The Grand Island bridge has had cashless tolls for more than a year and even though many drivers haven't had issues with being billed or paying their tolls by mail, some commuters have.

It looks like all drivers along the NYS thruway will have to get used to those cashless tolls.

According to WIVB.com, the entire 750-mile toll highway will go cashless by late next year.

Top officials at the New York State Thruway Authority held a Q&A at a Cashless Tolling Customer Outreach Event on Wednesday, on Grand Island.

NYSTA officials used the occasion to help commuters understand that the convenience of cashless tolls. Along with being responsible in paying the tolls, even if they didn't receive a bill.

"We've had nearly 24 million successful transactions, and less than 4% have not," said Executive Director of the Thruway Authority Matthew Driscoll.

Thruway officials said drivers' toll problems are self-inflicted, including not updating their address with the DMV, which is required by law.

Drivers are encouraged to pay their bills as soon as possible and to help minimize mistakes with billing, by signing up for an E-ZPass.

It should be interesting at how the cashless tolls along the NYS thruway go, especially when they're first implemented.
