The new emergency department at ECMC has become a focal point for healthcare in Western New York.

But it’s more than the technology that makes ECMC the premier facility for the best possible care you can receive. Like Buffalo, the essence of what makes ECMC thrive is the culture behind the doors. From the volunteers to the doctors and nurses, there is a vibe of confidence and support from every person you encounter at ECMC.

I've spent time talking with Dr. Sam Cloud, an ECMC attending physician in emergency care, and not only does the new Emergency Department have state-of-the-art facility and equipment, but the design itself maximizes employee performance and patient comfort. For example, the radiology has a central location, while the ambulance bay is separate from the waiting room and other entrances to the emergency department.

Of course, trauma and emergency care is just part of the services at ECMC. They offer bariatric surgery, sports medicine, cancer and oncology treatment, renal care, rehabilitation and long-term care and so much more. I'm particularly touched by success stories from their behavioral health programs.

The Regional Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health treats substance abuse as well as psychiatric and mental health issues. A psychiatrist is always available in the emergency department, and patients can receive substance abuse evaluations 24-7. ECMC is the only Buffalo-area hospital that offers both those services, and I'm proud to live in a community that can offer people who need them that help immediately.
