Do you use deer scents when you hunt? For those who plan to hunt in New York State this fall, and are using deer scent as lures, there are some thing that you should be aware of before you get to the woods. New York State, like most others, is always concerned about the possible spread of CWD among the deer population and you can help.

I wrote a story a few weeks ago about a freaky looking deer that is wondering the woods around Cattaraugus County in New York State. The deer has what are known as "deer warts" covering it's body. By most accounts, this is a common thing and would have no impact on the health of the venison if you were to eat it.

But the concern about CWD, Chronic Wasting Disease, is a legitimate one as it has been known to decimate deer herds. That is why you need to be aware of the laws and the warnings from the DEC aimed at CWD prevention. The CDC says: "Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a serious disease in animals such as deer, elk, moose and reindeer. Since first reported in the United States, CWD has spread to animals in more than half of the states in the continental United States. It is always fatal in infected animals".

New York State's "Deer Urine" Suggestions

As hunters, our primary concern for the wildlife we hunt is conservation. We are helping to control the population and keeping that population healthy is also a priority. How can you help? It all starts before the hunt begins.

According to a post from the New York State DEC, hunters are encouraged to use synthetic deer urine as a lure or attractant this fall. "You may use cover scents and lures for deer hunting. However, hunters should use synthetic products, as natural deer urine products could contain CWD prions. While bear hunting, you may use up to 1.5 fluid ounces of a liquid scent/lure".

Best of luck this fall! You can already feel the cool air move in and the leaves are starting to change. It is the best time of the year!
