The blast of Winter over the weekend has added to the snowfall totals of three of the snowiest cities in America.

As of this writing, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse are all ranked in the Top 10 for snowiest winter this year with each city getting at least 50 inches of snow so far this winter.

EXTRA: THE SNOWIEST DAYS IN NEW YORK HISTORY

Of course, 50 inches is well below the average for each city but it wasn't just New York State that had a pretty mild winter when it came to snowfall. Most of the United States was under the normal amount of snowfall due to the El Nino weather system that came through this past winter.

An El Nino is forecasted when warmer water is in the Pacific Ocean and that causes the jet stream to drop lower across the country.

Typically when we experience an El Nino, here in New York we have much drier and milder conditions. How much more is depends on the strength of the El Nino

El NInos on average will last between 9 and 12 months. They vary in strength and usually happen every 3 to 5 years.

HOW WILL THE EL NINO IMPACT SUMMER AND WINTER?

Usually here in New York, we don't get much of an impact of the El Nino during the summer. We could see some drier conditions, but the real impact will be in the winter. During El Ninos, there is less chance of snow and milder temperatures.
