Your Luggage Will Most Likely Get Stolen Here in New York
There's nothing more frustrating after a long flight than waiting on bags that have already been stolen. In New York, it's most likely to happen at this airport.
The vacation is over. You had fun and now unfortunately you have to go back to reality. It never feels good to think that your days of sitting on the beach are over and instead, you're headed back to the job you needed a vacation from in the first place. Then when you land and you go to the baggage carousel all the bags come out and yours is nowhere to be seen.
What happened to it? Did they lose it? Or did someone else grab it? Was it a mistake? Or did someone just really like your piece of luggage better?
You go to the staff at the airport and they assure you that all the bags made it here. It must have been stolen. Now your luggage and everything that was in it is gone.
It happens all over the country every day. But if you're in New York and it happens to you, chances are, it happened at JFK International Airport. According to a recent study by AirAdvisor, that airport has the most lawless airport baggage returns in New York and the 4th most in the entire country. It's only behind Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
There are a couple of things that they looked at to determine it. The study was based on:
Passenger volumes
Searches for lost luggage
Reviews
Google rating
Distance to baggage claim from the gate

Obviously, the more people there are, the harder it is to watch everyone. This is why passenger volume was looked at. They move over 63 million passengers each year and see over 12,000 searches for lost luggage. But the biggest issue at JFK is the distance from the gate to the baggage claim. On average, they found it took about 25 minutes to get there. That means that if someone wanted to wait by the carousel, they could have your bag in hand and be out the door long before you even got off there.
