The Northern Lights Could Be Coming to New York State

There hasn't been much to get excited about in 2022, when it comes to anything that is involving the weather. It's been cold. It's been snowy. It's been wet. Everyone wants warmer temperatures.

While we still have to wait another two or three weeks at least for the warmer weather to stick for good, there is something that could be coming soon that will get many people excited.

It's not too common to see the Northern Lights in New York State, but it can happen. The Northern Lights are also called the Aurora Borealis (or auroras), which is created when there are disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by solar winds.

Auroras are typically seen far north near the poles, but occasionally, they can be seen as far south as the northern United States. That could very well be the case later this week.

According to Space Weather, there is a geomagnetic storm watch, as moderately strong G-2 class geomagnetic storms will be possible on Thursday, March 31st.

Auroras could be seen with the naked eye for those in regions, such as Idaho and New York. This should include much of New York.

It could also extend into April 1st. Cloud cover will be important to see auroras in the sky, which are a sight for anyone who has ever gotten the chance to see them in person.

Right now, there are chances for rain showers and even mixed into snow for parts of New York from Thursday into Friday.

Fingers crossed that we are able to catch a glimpse of aurora this week.
