Just because you have the receipt and you didn’t open the product does not mean you can return this item.

Every home in the United States is now eligible to order 4 free at-home COVID-19 tests. These tests are completely free, which is great news; however, some people already stocked up on some at-home COVID-19 tests from the store, to which you may be wondering, “Can I get my money back?”

I wish I could tell you that you could, but unfortunately, I can’t.

COVID-19 tests may not be returned at any location that you have purchased them. Having proof of purchase with a receipt and the unopened product does not change the fact that retailers who sell COVID-19 tests cannot issue a return.

You may be reading this thinking Duh, it’s a health precaution, and yes, it is; however, some people have tried to return their COVID-19 at-home test after receiving their free ones in the mail, and it became quite an ordeal in Depew this week.

As I was in the check-out line for gum, a guy came in and cut in front of me asking to make a return. The associate behind the cash register was very patient, and he tried to help this customer with his request.

“Sure…what are you returning?”

The customer promptly placed two COVID-19 at-home antigen tests on the counter.

“I have my receipt in my pocket, one second,” the customer said as he was fishing around for something in his pocket.

That’s when the associate behind the register kindly said, “I’m sorry sir, I actually can’t make a return on a COVID test. I’m sorry but —”

And that’s about where he was interrupted, and the customer began cursing and condemning the establishment for stealing his money “just like the government” and how he would never come back to this location.

Here’s a friendly reminder: be nice to people and don’t try to return a COVID-19 at-home test.
