Free flights from the U.S. Mint? What was that phrase my parents used to tell me, "If it sounds too good to be true, it's probably a scam". Well, it looks like some people are actually scamming the U.S. Mint for free airlines tickets.

The U.S. Mint through a 2005 act of congress was trying to put more of the golden presdiential and Sacagewea dollar coins into circulation.  These coins have not caught on with the general public. So the U.S. Mint decided to actively promote people buying these coins from the mint.  The dollar coin trick involves purchasing large amounts of coins with a frequent flier card, waiting for the Mint to ship the coins (free shipping!), and then taking the coins to the bank, where they are deposited and the money is used to pay the credit card charges. No money is lost, the frequent flier miles rack up, and people are getting free flights. Forbes.com has the details on this scam.
