The archery season is about to begin across New York State and the weather looks perfect in the Western New York area. The scouting has been done and the practice has been put in and now it is time to get in the tree stand!

But here in New York State, the next generation is also getting ready to head for the woods. The 12-13 year old hunters will have their chance again this year to get that buck that they have been dreaming of and watching grow all summer.

It turns out, the youth season was pretty successful last year in New York. The Department of Environmental Conservation indicates that in 2021-21 just over 1500 deer were taken by those aged 12-13.

As we get ready for the season to start, keep in mind that there are some specific rules for youth hunters. Beyond having the required safety courses and licenses, youth hunters must have a qualified adult with them.

12-13 year old youth must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or a person who is 21 years or older. Adult mentor must have at least 3 years of experience hunting deer or bear with a bow and have a license to hunt big game in the same seasons.

The special youth firearms season will take place Columbus Day weekend again this year. The dates are Saturday October 8 and Sunday October 9th. There is a map of counties that allows 12 and 13 year old hunters to hunt with a firearm during these two days as well.
Good luck and stay safe!
