I thought it was a joke when I first read this story, but it's totally true. In a town downstate, American flags keep being reported stolen. At first, the town and cemetery officials figured it was a hate crime of some sort, until they checked the surveillance cameras.

The wooden pole attached to the flag is what the little thieves find tasty.

"When the police responded and opened up the surveillance cameras, we were startled to find that a woodchuck was sitting there at the base of the gravestone with an empty flag pole in front of him," Cedar Park Cemetery caretaker Vincent Wallace told Hudson Valley YNN.

Perhaps the furry creatures are upset over the fact they only are appreciated one day a year? The cemetery has been getting many complaints over the missing flags and now have to figure a way to either remove the over-sized rodents or perhaps use flags with metal or plastic poles.
