NBC News anchor Brian Williams announced on Saturday that he's temporarily stepping down from his duties on the network's evening news show.  In a brief statement, Williams said "it has become painfully apparent to me that I am presently too much a part of the news, due to my actions."

Williams said he had "decided to take myself off of my daily broadcast for the next several days" and that weekend anchor Lester Holt be his replacement.  Williams went on to say, "upon my return, I will continue my career-long effort to be worthy of the trust of those who place their trust in us."

It's been a tough week for Williams after it was revealed his story about coming under enemy fire in a helicopter while reporting in Iraq in 2003 was untrue.  He apologized on Wednesday, saying it was due to faulty memory.  But he's come under heavy criticism and it was a surprise that he was on the newscasts both Thursday and Friday.

Since then, other reports and stories he's told over the years have come under scrutiny including his coverage of Hurricane Katrina in 2006.

NBC News has announced it will conduct an internal investigation of Williams Iraq helicopter story.  The whole incident puts not only his integrity, but his career in jeopardy.
