Craig Morgan jumped to the defense of country music after a bizarre comment from a guest on MSNBC caused the network to issue an on-air apology.

The panel on NOW With Alex Wagner was discussing Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who said in a TV appearance after announcing his candidacy for president in 2016 that his tastes turned away from classic rock and toward country music in the wake of 9/11 because "I didn't like how rock music responded, and country music collectively, the way they responded, it resonated with me, and I have to say it, just as a gut level, I had an emotional reaction that says, ‘These are my people.’”

Ebony.com Senior Editor Jamilah Lemieux responded incredulously to that, saying, “Nothing says, ‘Let’s go kill some Muslims’ like country music, fresh from Lynchburg, Virginia,” while panelists Joan Walsh and Michael Steele laughed. Guest host Ari Melber issued an apology just minutes later, saying the comment was inappropriate.

"It's a little insulting, but it's also laughable," Morgan tells Fox News. "After watching Senator Cruz' comments, he was simply telling a little bit about his personality. I don't know why Miss Lemieux felt the need to be so ... really, it was just rude."

Morgan, who served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve prior to his country music career, adds, "Country music is the most-listened-to genre. That's a reality ... there's a lot of ignorance on their part, I believe, more than anything."

Morgan made headlines earlier this year when he publicly decried tweets from Seth Rogen and Michael Moore about the film American Sniper. He says Lemieux' comments are more of the same.

"Any time they have the opportunity to use something against a politician, or against a Republican, they're just scratching at the surface to get anything they can to insult these people," Morgan states. "And now they were trying to use country music — a format of music which is probably the most patriotic genre of music."

He adds," I love all genres of music, I listen to various formats, but I always inevitably come back to a country song, because it is, to me, a more relatable music."
