Something extremely rare happened in Western New York this week, and as a result, two parents are being rewarded for it.

As you may know, 2024 is a leap year, which only comes around once every four years. That means your Facebook memories return from the depths of your archives, there may be some shopping deals, tons of frog-related leaping puns, and of course, there is a chance that a baby will be born on Leap Day.

Although the chances are rare, there is still a chance that your baby could be born on February 29. According to an Obstetrics & Gynecology physician doctor, the odds of being born on Leap Day is one in 1,461 days, which means you are about .07% likely to be born on the day.

It is estimated that only about 5 million people in the world share the Feb. 29th birthday, and we can add a Western New York baby to the exclusive group.

And guess what? That leapling helped their family get some free groceries!

The family of the first leap day baby born on Feb. 29, 2024 received a $2,900 gift card from Tops Friendly Markets.

Watch the video of the mother being surprised with the gift card in the delivery room.

Baby Ava arrived at 2:55 AM at Oishei Children’s Hospital, according to WKBW, becoming the first Leap Day baby in Western New York.

Normally, you get gifts on your birthday, but baby Ava helped her parents Justin and Aaliyah get free goodies from Tops Friendly Markets! What a warm welcome. 🙂
