Crews in North Tonawanda worked for hours on Tuesday to contain a gasoline spill in the Erie Canal caused by a partial submerged pleasure boat.  The boat was found floating on its side while docked along Sweeney Street directly across from the Remington Restaurant early Tuesday morning.

North Tonawanda firefighters were joined by firefighters from Niagara Falls along with Niagara County and New York State Haz-Mat crews, the New York State Environmental Protection Agency and the Niagara County Emergency Spill Response team to clean up the estimated 60 gallons of gasoline that spilled into the canal.

Crews used pumps to remove water from the hull of the boat while at the same time trying not to allow any more gasoline spill into the canal.  A section of Sweeney Street in the area of the spill was closed to traffic.
