There is a hack that is going around on social media that I thought was joke, but it turns out people have had some success with it.

I heard this from someone in Springville. Safe to say you can always trust someone in Springville/Arcade/Holland with farming and gardening advice--they all know what they're doing out there.

I told him that my garden didn't do too good last year. Although, I did plant a little early before Memorial Day.

We decided, it may be the soil, could be the lack of water, could be the lack of nutrients. But, his suggestion? Pee on the tomato plants. My first reaction was 'that's insane there's no way that works', but according to Popsci.com, the study has already been done:

Human urine works remarkably well as a fertilizer for tomatoes, according to a new study out of Finland. Plants fertilized with a mixture of stored human urine and wood ash produced 4.2 times more fruit than plants without the pee, the study found".

HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD OF THIS?!

Here are some other tips that listeners called in and gave us Friday morning. What else can you add to the list?

  1. Cinnamon powder on seedlings to prevent diseases.
  2. Cut a pop bottle horizontally in half and put one half over your seedlings when you first start to make a 'greenhouse' that will protect the young plants as they get their roots stronger.
  3. Use coffee grounds to keep rodents away from your garden.
  4. Eggshells will also prevent pests.
