Today is Relaxation Day – a day set aside to make us realize that there’s nothing wrong with relaxing once in a while.

It seems it might be better if it fell on the weekend, but I guess we have to realize that getting rest for not only our body but our mind is important.

Many of us have this value that we have to work hard all the time. It could be religious, could be cultural, it could be an American ethic. But if we’re not working hard, some people feel guilty. Some people are on the go all the time. In the end, it will just wear you down. What you should do is to give things the attention they deserve at the appropriate times and not let it occupy all hours of the day. One thing at a time.

Realize that sleep is important. I’m guilty of this. I wish sleep wasn't so important. I sometimes think that sleep is a waste of time because there are so many things I’d like to do, but boy, when you finally do get into bed, it sure feels good. And you have to realize that learning continues while you’re asleep. Sleep restores and refreshes your body and your mind. And it especially allows your brain to do relax in ways it just can’t during the day. Some people can get by on four or five hours of sleep, but most people need six or eight hours.

You should block out times in your day to relax. One expert says you should “think of it as an appointment with your most important client – you – that you absolutely can’t break."

Dedicate time during the day to relax. Even go so far as to mark off your relaxation time on a calendar so that everyone can see it. The whole family will realize it’s important to you and it should be important to them.

And keep looking for the right activities that allow you to relax. It may take some time, but keep at it until you find the things that really put your body and mind at ease.

Some of the things that people say help them relax:

  • Go to a spa
  • Go fishing
  • Play a round of golf
  • Lay in a hammock
  • Take a bubble bath
  • Spend the day at the beach
  • Do a little gardening
  • Go to the movies
  • Have a picnic in the park
