A group called Hollaback recently released a video produced by Rob Bliss of Rob Bliss Creative that was meant to tackle "Street Harassment".  They define Street Harassment as a form of sexual harassment that takes place in public spaces.  But I think they may have missed the mark with it.

First...here's the video:

Here are a few things to point out about the video...

1.  That girl owes no one anything.  The part where the guy said, "Somebody's acknowledging you for being beautiful, you should say thank you," is pretty ridiculous.  Why should she stop what she's doing because you made a comment?

2. The guy that walked silently next to her for 5 minutes was just creepy.  Is that how he picks up girls?

3.  Guys, stop being surprised when a girl doesn't want to talk to you.

I'm sure I'm going to get blasted for this but here's where I think the video falls short.

If you're trying to make a point, make it clear.  For many people (myself included), I can see where many people would have a hard time understanding why statements such as:

  • Have a nice day.
  • Have a nice evening
  • How are you this morning?

can be considered "harassment".

Because I'm trying to make a point, I'm going to try to be clear too.  Most of what was seen in that video could, without a doubt be considered harassment.  Nobody deserves that.  I'm also not saying that "street harassment"  doesn't exist.  It undoubtedly does.  I just think this video doesn't really do a good job of making it clear to people.

Respect seems to be pretty non existent these days.

It seems we are eliminating actual person to person interaction more and more.  When I am no longer able to say "have a nice day" to someone on the street without being accused of harassment then this world will become a pretty dark place to live.
