Just two days before the 2017-18 season opener, the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night announced that the team and star forward Jack Eichel have agreed to terms on a contract extension that will guarantee that Eichel will remain a member of the Sabres thru at least 2025-26.

The agreement is for a reported 8 years and $80-million.  It would make Eichel the 6th highest-paid player in the NHL.

Despite missing the first 21 games last season with an injury, Eichel led the Sabres with 24 goals and 33 assists for 57 points.  Since he entered the NHL in 2015, Eichel is Buffalo's second-leading scorer with 48 goals and 65 assists for 113 points in 142 games.

The Sabres open the season Thursday night at KeyBank Center against the Montreal Canadiens.
