The services they provide at the scene and on the way to the hospital often mean the difference between life and death.  Any idea when the first ambulances debuted?  You’d have to go all the way back to the 11th century during the crusades when the Knights of St. John treated wounded soldiers on both sides of the war.  They were the first emergency workers to use specially designed carts to take the wounded to battlefield hospital tents.

In this area, we’re familiar with Rural Metro and Twin Cities Ambulance, but the largest medical transport service in the world is St. John ambulance with 300-thousand workers in 42 countries around the world including Great Britain, Australia, Canada and the United States.  St. John’s is the oldest humanitarian organization in the world, teaching first aid and safety skills to tens of thousands of volunteers every year.

The first motorized ambulances have been around since the early 20th century.

The first helicopter ambulance service was started during the Korean war.
