The Chiefs and Bills are no strangers to each other.  In fact, the two former AFL teams have met 46 times in the regular season in their long histories. The Bills have an ever-so-slight edge in the series with a 24-21-1 mark.  The two clubs have also met in the postseason four times, with each team coming out on top twice.  An interesting stat of note, all four of the postseason games have one common theme, they were blowouts settled by two touchdowns or more.

Let's take a deeper dive into Bills vs. Chiefs in the Playoffs.

January 1, 1967 - The AFL Championship Game

War Memorial Stadium, Buffalo, NY

1966 AFL Championship Game

Chiefs - 31
Bills - 7

The AFL Eastern Division Champion Bills took it on the chin from their rivals from the AFL west this day 31-7.  The AFL had agreed to merge with the NFL earlier in 1966, and the Bills were playing for the right to represent the AFL in Super Bowl I vs. The Green Bay Packers.  Unfortunately, that would never come to be as The Chiefs jumped out to a 17-7 lead at the half, and The Bills would have to wait 25 more years for their first Super Bowl appearance.

January 5, 1992 - AFC Divisional Playoffs

Rich Stadium, Buffalo, NY

1992 AFC Divisional Playoffs

Bills - 37
Chiefs - 14

The Bills got their revenge for the 1966  AFL Championship game loss, as well as a 1991 regular-season loss to the Chiefs by eliminating them from the playoffs with a blowout 37–14 win, outgaining them in total yards 448–213. Buffalo jumped out to a 24-0 lead on the strength of 278 passing yards from Jim Kelly, and a 100-yard rushing effort from Thurman Thomas.  The Bills would go on to run the table in the AFC playoffs before eventually losing to the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXVI.

January 23, 1994 - AFC Championship Game

Rich Stadium, Buffalo, NY

1994 AFC Championship Game

Bills - 30
Chiefs - 13

There are two very memorable things from this game.  The first is that the Bills were going for their 4th consecutive AFC Championship and 4th straight Super Bowl appearance.  The second was Bruce Smith essentially ending the career of Joe Montana when he knocked him out of the game with a concussion on the Chiefs' first drive in the second half, forcing backup Dave Kreig into the game.  Thurman Thomas ran 33 times for 186 yards and three touchdowns, propelling the Bills to Super Bowl XXVIII.

January 24, 2021 - AFC Championship Game

Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, MO

2021 AFC Championship Game

Chiefs - 38
Bills - 24

This was the second time the two clubs met in the AFC Championship Game, and this time the Chiefs got their revenge.  The Chiefs overcame an early 9–0 deficit, rolling up 38 points and 439 total yards on their way to their second consecutive Super Bowl.  Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes completed 29 of 38 passes for 325 yards and 3 touchdowns, and WR Tyreek Hill had 9 receptions for a Cheifs record 172 yards.

This year's matchup is set for Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium, with the Bills making their second postseason appearance in Kansas City.  The Chiefs will be looking to advance to their 5th Super Bowl, which would be their third straight trip to the big game representing the AFC.
