There is no excuse in 2023 for the Buffalo Bills.

Yes, the AFC is just as loaded as 2022, if not even more so, but Buffalo's roster stacks up against any of the competing teams in the conference.

General manager Brandon Beane made it a point to improve the already good roster in the spring. Buffalo did lose the likes of Tremaine Edmunds, Devin Singletary, Jamison Crowder and Isaiah McKenzie, but they added a ton of talent on both sides of the ball.

The Bills signed:

  • Connor McGovern (G)
  • David Edwards (OL)
  • Brandon Shell (OT)
  • Damien Harris (RB)
  • Latavius Murray (RB)
  • Deonte Harty (WR)
  • Trent Sherfield (WR)
  • Poona Ford (DT)
  • Taylor Rapp (S)

The Bills also drafted tight end Dalton Kincaid and guard O'Cyrus Torrence in the 2023 NFL Draft. On Monday, they agreed to terms with another prized free agent.

Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network reports that the Bills are signing LB/edge rusher Leonard Floyd.

The 7-year pro has spent the past three seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, where's he's accumulated 29 sacks. That's 10th most of NFL players over that time period. Floyd will add another piece to an already loaded front seven and allows Von Miller to not rush back from his knee injury.

However, the Bills have too many players on the defensive line. Not all of them will be on the roster by week 1 and two players could be cut or traded by the regular season.

Boogie Basham and A.J. Epenesa.

Basham was a second round pick in 2021, while Epenesa was a second round pick in 2020. Both have been in the rotation on the edge since being drafted, but neither has made an impact since being on the Bills.

Basham has some versatility, being able to play defensive end but big enough to work inside. Epenesa is a one-trick pony -- rushing the passer.

Here's the Bills defensive line right now:

  • Von Miller (edge)
  • Leonard Floyd (edge)
  • Greg Rousseau (edge)
  • Shaq Lawson (edge)
  • Boogie Basham (edge)
  • A.J. Epenesa (edge)
  • Ed Oliver (DT)
  • DaQuan Jones (DT)
  • Tim Settle (DT)
  • Jordan Phillips (DT)
  • Poona Ford (DT)
  • Eli Ankou (DT)
  • Kingsley Jonathan (edge)

The Bills are not keeping 13 defensive lineman on the 53-man roster, that's just not feasible.

The guarantees to make the roster are Miller, Floyd, Rousseau, Oliver, Jones, Ford and Phillips.

Settle likely makes the roster but not 100 percent. Ankou and Jonathan have an uphill climb, while Basham and Epenesa could be deemed expendable. Lawson is not a certainty to make the team as well.

Don't be surprised if Basham or Epenesa is not on the Bills by early September.
