Fall is officially here in New York State, and the next stop is winter! Are you ready? Have you thought ahead to all the snow, cold weather, and icy conditions we might experience again this year? If not, now is the time to start preparing. New York State has a reminder for anyone who owns a vehicle.

I get picked on a lot by friends and family because I am always thinking a season ahead. When fall arrives, I am already thinking about winter. When winter gets here, I will probably be thinking about spring. That is just because I like to be prepared and always have something to look forward to.

Don’t get me wrong. I try to enjoy the season I am in and be as present as possible. But having something to look forward to and being prepared doesn’t hurt, especially with the four kids we have. In fact, it makes things a little more exciting to have something extra to look forward to.

But I also grew up here in New York State, and I know that fall and winter can be long, drawn-out seasons, especially if you aren’t prepared and have a lot of driving to do. Whether it’s taking the kids back and forth to practice or making a long commute to work, winter driving can be challenging.

There have been plenty of mornings when I was halfway to work, wondering why I didn’t just call in and avoid the massive snowstorm.

But for those who have to drive in winter weather and have no other option, there is an important reminder for New York State drivers when it comes to their vehicles.

When Can You Put Snow Tires on Your Vehicle in New York State?

If you plan to install snow tires this year, New York State reminds drivers that studded snow tires are permitted from October 16 through April 30, 2027.

Snow tires can make a big difference when it comes to getting around, especially if your vehicle struggles with traction in the snow, such as a rear-wheel-drive car.

Four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles have become increasingly common in New York State, but even those vehicles need good tires to handle winter conditions.

Check Your Tire Tread Before Winter Arrives

According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, drivers should also inspect the tread on their tires before winter arrives.

The minimum legal tread depth for most passenger vehicle tires in New York State is 2/32 of an inch, although tires with more tread may provide better traction in winter conditions.

This would be a good time to have a vehicle specialist or mechanic inspect your tires and offer advice on which ones might be best for the winter months.

Call me crazy, but it never hurts to plan ahead for cold weather and the possibility that you might get stranded somewhere.

Make sure your car battery is ready for the colder temperatures and that your vehicle has everything you need for the fall and winter months ahead.

A Western New York Dad’s Winter Driving Tip

One other thing I always get picked on for, but that I consider a very dad-like thing to do here in Western New York, is keeping your gas tank more than half full at all times.

You never know when you might get stuck on the road during a snowstorm, and having extra fuel can provide some peace of mind.

Start Preparing for Winter in New York State

While many people are putting up their Halloween decorations and thinking ahead to the holidays, I am already planning for the weather and the next season we are about to face.

Winter will be here before we know it, and taking a little time now to prepare your vehicle could make a big difference when the snow and ice arrive.
