Some meteorologists are looking ahead to the winter season here in New York State, and there is one thing that could cause a major issue for New Yorkers this upcoming winter.

Many weather forecasters are calling for an El Niño weather system this winter, and that could end up bringing more snow and cold than normal.

Often, when an El Niño forms ahead of winter, it leads to a warmer and wetter winter, but this year could be different.

There Are Two TYpes Of Weather Systems That Can Impact Our Winter Weather

What is an El Niño? - An El Niño, according to NOAA.org, is a weather system that moves over warmer waters in the Paficic and that tends to move the jet stream south of its neutral position which yrpically brings a dryer and warmer winter weather system. This year could be different as spring has been cooler than normal and the paficis waters are cooler than normal.

What is a La Niña? - A La Niña has the opposite effect than an El Niño and pushes warmer weather away from North America, bringing up cool water and temperatures that the winds will move across North America. While a La Nina usuall means a colder winter, that is not always the case.
