Buffalo Bills Lose a Player They Needed for the Entire Season
To say that the second preseason game this year was a frustrating watch, would be vast understatement.
The Bills lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers by a score of 27-15. The first team unit was dominated by the Steelers first teamers in the first quarter, trailing 14-0 early on.
There was little good to say about both the offensive and defensive line, especially the offensive line, who had Josh Allen scrambling multiple times on Saturday night.
Right tackle Spencer Brown looked particularly bad and the penalties were a huge concern as well; 11 of them in the first half.
The Bills also suffered multiple injuries.
Quarterback Matt Barkley sustained an elbow injury on a sack/fumble in the second half and we don't yet know how severe it is. The Bills also lost one of their main depth players at tackle, who they were relying on to be a primary backup.
Offensive tackle Tommy Doyle will miss the 2023 season after a left knee injury on Saturday. This is crushing news because Doyle had an ACL injury in the right knee of the Bills' week 3 of 2022, and missed the entire season. He will now have the same injury to the left knee.
Head coach Sean McDermott said that he feels for Doyle and that everyone is thinking about him. For Doyle, it's as much a mental blow as it is a physical one. It's unimaginable what he is going through and we hope he can return to the field to continue his career in 2024.
As for the Bills' roster depth at tackle, they also lost Brandon Shell who retired last week. That means the only experience the Bills have behind Dion Dawkins and Spencer Brown is David Quessenberry.
The Bills signed journeyman Garrett McGhin on Sunday night, who most recently played in the XFL. He only has two career games played in the NFL since 2019...
The Bills cannot afford to have depth issues at OL. It will be a reason they lose games this season is there are more injuries.
