As the United States of America celebrates Veterans Day, Western New York also pays homage to all who have served in the military and other uniformed services across the country.

What Is Veterans Day?

According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Day is a federal holiday that was established in 1938 and was originally called Armistice Day due to the World War 1 armistice that went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

However, due to World War 2 and the Korean War, Congress was urged to amend the holiday to include all American veterans who have served. Since then the holiday has been known as Veterans Day.

How Does Buffalo Rank When Compared To Other Cities For Veterans

A recent survey by Lawn Starter took a look at how well different cities are set up to support veterans after they leave the service and transition into civilian life.

They looked at the 200 largest American cities and scored them using 46 different factors. Using those metrics they came up with a rating to determine the best and worst cities for Veterans.

Buffalo ranked very high on the list, reaching 23rd out of the 200 cities that were evaluated.

Buffalo achieved high rankings for its access to medical and mental health care, relative safety, and educational opportunities. While Buffalo has a general affordable housing crisis, it still ranked in the top half of cities for veteran housing opportunities as well.

Overall, Buffalo ranks well on the national rank and comes in second place among cities in New York State, trailing only Syracuse.
