There is a new phenomenon that dentists are discovering now that people are coming back...Mask Mouth!  They say it's deteriorating people's teeth.

Yup...you read that right.  It's Mask Mouth and it's a serious side effect that some dentists are claiming is caused by people wearing masks all the time.  They're seeing people who used to have perfect hygiene that are coming back to the dentist with decaying teeth, receding gum lines and seriously stinky breath.

So what would cause someone who normally had good hygiene to experience such a turn?  They claim that when you wear a mask all day, you could experience a dry mouth and a buildup of bad bacteria.  If you wear a mask, more often than not, you breathe through your mouth.  That's what is causing the dry mouth.  Saliva is what fights the bad bacteria in your mouth.  So if you aren't creating saliva like you used to, the bad bacteria just builds up and deteriorates your teeth.

“We’re seeing inflammation in people’s gums that have been healthy forever, and cavities in people who have never had them before,” -- Dr. Rob Ramondi (dentist)

As your dentist has told you in the past, gum disease (or periodontal disease) could lead to strokes and an increased risk of heart attacks.

Now...this isn't an excuse to not wear a mask.  However, there are things that you can do to decrease mask mouth for yourself.

  1. drink more water
  2. cut down on caffeine
  3. snag a humidifier (to “help moisten the air”)
  4. use an alcohol-free mouthwash
  5. scrape your tongue
  6. don’t smoke

When all else fails, do your best to simply breathe through your nose!
