$8 Egg Prices are Coming in New York State
The prices for eggs are very expensive around New York State right now.
If you have gone to the grocery store you know how expensive they are. We went to the grocery store yesterday and paid almost 5 dollars for a carton of 12 eggs. I thought that was pretty expensive until I learned that people were paying over 8 bucks for 18 eggs. That is insane right now.
You know what happens--you get home for the grocery store and can spend 100 dollars in just a few minutes and then you get home and you think: "what did I even buy?" because it does not seem like a lot of groceries are even there.
The egg prices are going up so much because of the bird flu. The bird flu has been tracked in all 50 states recently and is limiting how many eggs are getting to stores. It is getting so bad that some stores have even put a limit on how many eggs that they will let you buy from the store.
An outbreak of avian influenza is growing and has affected nearly 13 million birds in the last 30 days, according to USDA data. In fact, the website does a really nice job of making the information known and very simple to understand:
- 12.97 birds are affected by the outbreak
- 40 backyard flocks are affected
- 49 massive commercial flocks
Over 100,000 birds were affected by the disease in Suffolk County in New York State just last week. You can see every state, county, type of farm and how many birds were effected right in a nice list.
