Here’s Why There Were So Many Corgis in East Aurora This Weekend

You really have to love East Aurora.

Every small town and village across the nation has its own identity and eccentricities. East Aurora is the epitome of Western New York cute and quirky.

And things got even quirkier -- and cuter -- on Sunday at Knox Farm State Park where over 40 corgis assembled ahead of National Welsh Corgi Day.

WIVB reports:

"Founder Connie Maue says it’s a great time for the dogs who love playing...that’s important because even if there is another dog at home it’s important for them to get out and socialize."

According to the American Kennel Club, Pembroke Welsh Corgi is ranked 13 of 197 in popularity of dog breeds. A corgi will stand about a foot tall, and weigh up to 30 lbs. Corgis live approximately 12-13 years.

The AKC describes the short (but spunky) breed:

"...a big dog in a small package. Short but powerful legs, muscular thighs, and a deep chest equip him for a hard day’s work. Built long and low, Pembrokes are surprisingly quick and agile. They can be red, sable, fawn, and black and tan, with or without white markings."

It's a popular historical and cultural fact that the breed is preferred by Queen Elizabeth -- she got her first corgi, Dookie, in 1933 and has always had a corgi (or two, or three) since.

National Corgi Day is March 1.
