There is a deadline looming for those who hunt in New York State.

It sure has been a long winter here in New York State. Many counties have been dealing with frigid temperatures and plenty of snow. However, some people have been embracing the conditions and getting outdoors to enjoy all that New York State offers.

But as the snow starts to melt and fade away, so are the hunting seasons here in the Empire State.

As we see near record warm temperatures this week, the end of many small game hunting seasons will also happen this week. If you love to hunt for rabbit or squirrel, you are running out of time this season.

Most of the small game seasons will come to a close on February 28th in New York State.

There are some exceptions to various seasons and it is best to check the maps and dates on the New York State DEC website.

As much as I love to hunt whitetail deer, small-game hunting can be so much fun! Being in the woods after a snowfall and trying to find rabbits or partridge is a great way to spend a winter afternoon. I have some great memories of hunting with friends when I was younger and now I am passing on the tradition to my kids.

It won't be long until we are waking up early to go turkey hunting in the spring! In fact, the Youth Turkey Season will take place on April 26th and April 27th here in New York State.
