This Is When You Will See A Bear In New York State
The spring is about to get here and across New York State, the black bears will be getting ready to emerge!
Maybe it is because I am getting older, but it seems like this winter has been about 8 months long and colder than usual! The snow seems to be never-ending. I actually like the winter and embrace the snow. However, I am ready for the warmer and longer days to arrive!
However, as the days start to get lighter earlier and the overnight lows stay above freezing, things become more exciting in the woods and forests around New York State.
I have been seeing plenty of wildlife activity around our property. Even on the ten acres that we own, there are dozens of coyote tracks, foxes, deer, and the occasional rabbit on the move. But it won't be long before the bear activity starts to pick up.
When Do The Black Bears Wake Up In New York State?
According to most of the articles that I have read, within the next few weeks we should see the males emerge from hibernation.
"March not only signals spring weather, but also the time when bears emerge from their dens. In New York, bears generally emerge from their sleep in late March and early April".
As is the case with most wildlife, there are always exceptions and you might see a black bear out wandering for food if the weather conditions get warmer. Last year, a larger bear was seen on a trail camera and it was a reminder to keep the trash can lids locked on and make your property less attractive to bears. It may be a good idea to put that bird feeder away or at least limit the amount of bird food in the yard to limit the snack temptation for bears.
We are blessed to have such a large variety of wildlife in New York State and with common sense, we can enjoy the woods together!
