The news is not great this week for those who love to shop at Jo-Ann Fabrics here in New York State.

There is a good chance that when you need craft items, or decorations for the home, you stop by a Jo-Ann Fabrics. Many families count on the craft store for their kid's school projects as well.

In a news release this week, it was announced that Jo-Ann Fabrics is facing a mjor financial hurdle.

There is good news and bad news as the stores will apparently be staying open. CBS News reports that, "fabric and crafts retailer Joann declared bankruptcy on Monday amid spending cutbacks from consumers and higher operating costs. The retail chain said it plans to keep its 800-plus stores open while it works through the restructuring process".

Here in New York State, there are 32 Jo-Ann Fabrics stores. That number seems low considering that whenever you drive near a mall, there is a Jo-Ann Fabrics store somewhere near by.

California has the most locations with more than 75.

With rising prices and online shopping and the cost to employee people, it has to be tough for any brick and mortar store these days. It was just announced this week that Target is also making a few changes at it's stores.

But according to the reports, the reason for the new policy is for efficiency.

Target released a statement that says, in part, "we’re rolling out Express Self-Checkout with limits of 10 items or fewer at most of our nearly 2,000 stores nationwide. We’re opening more traditional lanes staffed by our team members across all our stores for guests who have more in their Target carts, need a helping hand, or just enjoy connecting with our team to help them get on their way sooner".
