Truck Crashes Into Rail Bridge In North Buffalo
Under normal circumstances, Colvin Avenue between Amherst Street near Linden is pretty busy. With several businesses, Delaware Park, and one of Buffalo’s best private schools within a few blocks of each other, that section of Colvin Ave is pretty busy for traffic.
However, Monday, February 16, 2026, happens to be a President’s Day, a federal holiday that has closed schools across Western New York. With schools closed, there wasn’t much traffic on Colvin Avenue, but that didn’t stop a commercial truck for finding a way to crash into the CSX rail bridge that carries freight train traffic through the Buffalo beltway.
This bridge has a notorious history of being hit by trucks as many drivers misjudge the height of the bridge, even though it’s clearly marked.
This truck crash, which occurred around 12:45 PM on Monday, February 16, had the little bit of traffic that needed to get through the Parkside neighborhood backed up for a few blocks as Buffalo Police worked to redirect traffic.

While that was going on, crews worked to get the truck unstuck from the bridge without causing it anymore damage.
While in past years the driver would be ticketed and sent on their way, this driver unfortunately decided to have this crash on the day new driver penalties go into effect from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.

While New York officials have been reminding truck divers to ‘check your height, know it's right’, they have also significantly increased penalties for truck drivers who do what this person just did.
Striking a bridge or driving an overweight vehicle will now earn you 8 penalties points against your license, more than enough to cause you to have to pay huge Driver Assessment penalties along with maybe even causing you to lose your license.
Buffalo Police officers on the scene said the driver was in line for a slew of traffic tickets for this crash.
It looks you have to make sure you’re more careful when driving around the Empire State, because it will cost you.
