The National Weather Service of Buffalo issued a winter storm warning for Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties, including the cities of Jamestown and Olean. The winter storm warning is in effect from 4 am today, Sunday, March 10 to Monday, March 11, 2024, at 5 am. The NWS is warning people living near both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

It will turn more wintry today, with rain changing over to snow areawide. The higher terrain east of both lakes will see the greatest accumulations. Winds will also increase through the day, with frequent gusts to 30 to 40 mph expected across much of the area by later on today.

Residents should expect heavy snow, 4 to 9 inches will fall. Wind gusts of up to 45 miles per hour will blow snow this afternoon and tonight. The greatest amounts of snow will accumulate in higher terrain areas. Less snow will accumulate near the shoreline and Interstate 90. Travel in the area could be difficult with blowing snow significantly reducing visibility. The winds could also cause trees to fall.

Another winter storm warning has been issued for Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis counties, including the cities of Oswego, Watertown, and Lowville. The warning is in effect from today through tomorrow at 2 pm.

The Eastern Lake Ontario Region, mainly across higher terrain such as the Tug Hill and Western Adirondacks, with lesser amounts across lower terrain including the city of Watertown.
