Most people who go to the park on a nice summer day are looking to have fun and enjoy the warm weather.

What started as a cookout and gathering in New York's third largest city turned deadly as shots rang out in Rochester's Maplewood Park and left at least one person dead, with multiple others injured.

According to reporting from News Channel 8 WROC-TV, Rochester Police responded in large numbers to a gathering in Bridge View Drive just after 6 pm on Sunday, July 28, 2024, after reports of gunfire.

When officers arrived at Maplewood Park, they found several people injured, wounded by gunfire, and at least one person dead. The identity of the victim who died hasn't been released by officials yet, at this time all we know is the person was 20-years-old.

At this point, we don’t know how many people were shooting... We are trying to work our way through that. We are trying to work our way through as many witnesses as we can.
Captain Greg Bello, Rochester Police speaking with WROC-TV

Videos that were posted to social media show what appeared to be a fun scene of people at the park before the gunfire ensued. Once the shots began, the scene turned chaotic as people ran for cover.

Data collected by New York State had shown Rochester has been seeing a decrease in gun violence this year when compared to the last five-year average.
