One of the largest grocery chains in New York State is being sued over "False and misleading" labeling on their store brand of sunscreen.

As the weather warms up and we head into the hot summer months here in New York, more of us will be out in the sun and will be applying plenty of sunscreen to protect us.

There might be one sunscreen that you won't be able to use soon. Wegmans is currently facing a class-action lawsuit over the labeling of their store-brand sunscreen.

The sunscreen is labeled "safe for coral reefs" but according to the lawsuit, the sunscreen actually contains several ingredients that are harmful to coral reefs.

The labeling on the Wegmans Brand Sport Broad Spectrum sunscreen lotion bottle reads that it is "reef conscious" which is a claim that allows the sunscreen to be compliant with Hawaii state law meant to protect coral reefs.

The class action lawsuit was filed earlier this month by Irondequoit resident Joelle Thomas. Sheehan & Associates is the law firm that filed the suit and they are looking to represent anyone who bought the sunscreen in New York that was expecting it "Reef Conscious" and that it would not cause harm to reefs and/or the environment.

The lawsuit also claims that labeling the sunscreen as "Reef Conscious" it allowed Wegmans to charge a premium for the sunscreen. 5.5oz bottles of the sunscreen were being sold at Wegmans for $4.99 per bottle which was more than sunscreen without the "Reef Conscious" label.
