While it has been very hot the last couple of days across Western New York, it will soon be Winter, and this year it could be a brutal one across Western New York.

There are a couple of reasons why we might have massive snowstorms in Western New York this Winter.

Warm Lake Temperatures

Most of the heavy snow that we get here in Western New York is lake effect snow. Lake effect snow happens when cold air moves over warm water. At the time of this writing, both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario temperatures have been above normal.

If the lakes remain warm at the start of Winter, we could be in for massive lake effect snowstorms across the 716.

La Nina Weather Front Expected This Winter

We are expecting a La Nina weather front to move in from the Northwest, and most times when La Ninas form ahead of Winter, they bring cold, wet air to Western New York.

This could lead to more widespread snowstorms across Western New York for a longer period of time. Plus if the temperatures remain cooler than normal, we could be looking at more snow staying on the ground and not melting between storms.

What do you think? Are you ready for snow and a lot of it, or are you hoping for a mild winter and even a green Christmas?
