This Is The Buffalo Sabres’ Most Unique Tradition
Many hockey fans were confused before the start of the Buffalo Sabres/Boston Bruins playoff series. The Sabres have not been in the playoffs since the 2010-11 season, and when ESPN went to KeyBank Center ahead of Game 1, hockey fans were treated to a truly unique Buffalo Sabres tradition.
Buffalo Sabres' Most Unique Tradition
Since the Buffalo Sabres entered the NHL back in 1970, they have been the only American-based team to play both the US and Canadian national anthems before every game, no matter what team is visiting.
Most NHL teams will play both anthems when one team is from the US and one team is from Canada. That is not the case here in Buffalo.
Why Do The Buffalo Sabres Play Both Anthems?
There are a couple of reasons why the Buffalo Sabres play both anthems every time. First off, the KeyBank Center is only a 5-minute drive from the Peace Bridge and Canada.
Many fans and season ticket holders are from Canada, and the team wants them to be recognized. In fact, the owners of the Sabres, when they first joined the league, chose to use the "Canadian/British" spelling of Sabre, instead of the American spelling of Saber, to honor all the Canadian fans of the team.
So tonight, sit back and enjoy both the US and Canadian National Anthems ahead of Game 2 at KeyBank Center in Buffalo.
